Aboard his fast Graves Motorsports YZ450F, Mark Burkhart scored his second win of the 2007 AMA Supermoto Championship at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah on Saturday, June 23. The win moves the Yamaha rider to within one point Jeff Ward in the title chase. Also in the Supermoto Lites class, Brandon Currie narrowly finished second aboard a Graves Motorsports YZ250F to retain the Lites points lead.
Supermoto... When the green lights flashed for the 12-lap Supermoto final, Burkhart didn’t get the start he wanted, arriving at the first turn behind Cassidy Anderson and Ward. While Anderson used his home-track knowledge to pull away, Burkhart settled in behind Ward, waiting for him to make a mistake. Cassidy was the first to falter, falling in the dirt on lap four and handing the lead to Ward. Still Burkhart kept the pressure on until Ward drifted wide in a turn on lap five, forfeiting the lead – and the win. “Cassidy put himself under a lot of pressure to win the race,” he said afterwards. “Once he fell I just rode behind Jeff and took my time until I could get by.”

Supermoto Lites... Currie posted the quickest qualifying time in Supermoto Lites, but his heat race was just a tick slower than David Pingree’s so he gridded second for the eight-lap final. Though Pingree made an aggressive start and shut the door on Currie at the first turn, the Yamaha rider pressured him for the entire race, using his YZ’s straightaway speed to best effect. But the track’s frequent surfaces changes negated the advantage and he had to settle for second by just 0.723 sec. “He’d pull me and I’d catch him and then we’d go back into another dirt section,” Currie said later. “But my Yamaha motor just keeps getting better and better. That bike is really fast.”
