The second round of the 2007 AMA Supermoto Championship was a huge success for the Graves Motorsports Yamaha team as Mark Burkhart and Brandon Currie won their respective Supermoto and Supermoto Lites races in Englishtown, NJ on Sunday, June 3. Burkhart’s win moves him to within five points of Jeff Ward in the Supermoto title chase, while Currie’s second consecutive victory improves his Supercross Lites points lead.
Supermoto... Gentle sprinkles turned into real rain as the Supermoto class lined up. Cassidy Anderson powered to the holeshot but spun out as soon as the course turned to dirt, putting Burkhart up front with Ward close behind. Burkhart gave up the lead on lap five but brilliantly chased Ward down and reclaimed it with just three of the 14 laps remaining. “It kept getting wetter and slicker because the dirt was getting dragged around the track,” he said. “But the Graves team works so well together, we’ve gotten my YZ450F where it’s easy to ride and I can do fast laps consistently.”

Supermoto Lites... Currie was fast all day, setting the quickest times in both qualifying sessions and winning his heat race. Then he jumped out front when the flag dropped for the 12-lap Supermoto Lites final and slid his YZ250F to a wire-to-wire victory in light rain. But the win was anything but easy, as Currie was closely hounded by David Pingree the whole way. “I didn’t want to push too hard because the track was a bit slippery,” he admitted later. “I knew it was going to be hard for David to pass me so I rode where I was comfortable.”
