In the inaugural AMA Supermoto event on Road America’s
new course, veteran Yamaha motocrosser Doug Henry thrilled the crowd by
earning a second-moto win over world champion Thierry van den Bosch with
just two corners remaining in the race.
Van den Bosch led 19 of the 20 laps in a tight four-rider lead group
that included Henry, Jurgen Kunzel and 2004 series champion Jeff Ward.
Moments before the checkered flag, Henry finally seized a chance to dive
underneath Van den Bosch. The two touched briefly, but Henry recovered
quickest to seize the lead for good on his Graves Motorsports-prepared
Yamaha YZ450F.
After faltering in the first moto, Henry’s victory was the perfect end
to the weekend, in which he also won the Superpole one-lap qualifying
contest and recorded the quickest race lap. He now sits in third place
in the championship standings after the first round of six in the
series.
