DiSalvo and
Hacking in Wild Superstock Showdown |
|
Missed it by that much…….
Leeds, AL
4/24/05
As promised after Daytona, Team Graves Yamaha came out swinging at Barber
Motorsports Park. Located outside Birmingham, Alabama the beautiful
circuit played host to the second round of the 2005 AMA Superstock
National Championship.
Qualifying saw an R-1, 2, 3 with team riders Jamie Hacking, Jason
DiSalvo, and Damon Buckmaster occupying the top three spots.
The race started well with Hacking trying to breakaway after taking the
early lead, with DiSalvo in dogged pursuit. Unable to clear off, Hacking
found himself dicing for position with DiSalvo late in the race.
Unnoticed in the meantime, Tommy Hayden mounted a late charge to catch
and pass the Yamaha Duo.
Last lap fireworks saw DiSalvo pass Hacking into the slow turn five,
with Hacking trying to mount a charge back around the outside into the
“Alabama Coaster” section of the track. Arriving to hot and having to
take to the grass at the entrance, Hacking tried to rejoin the track,
and unfortunately rejoined beside DiSalvo. The two bumped with Hacking
making a return trip to the grass. He luckily stayed upright and
rejoined to finish fourth.
It was a battle that fans are going to be talking about for a long time
to come. As Yamaha roadracing manager Tom Halverson put it, “Whether
you’re team members or not, when you’re racing you’re trying all-out to
win.”
It’s all excitement in the Superstock class. Stay tuned for the race
next week at California speedway in Fontana, Ca.

Hacking Scores
Flawless Supersport Performance |
|
With a pole position in qualifying, followed by a
flag-to-flag win in the Sunday final, Factory Yamaha rider Jamie Hacking
could hardly have wished for a better ride in the 2005 AMA Supersport
Championship event at Alabama’s Barber Motorsports Park on the weekend
of April 23-24.
Right from the green flag, Roger and Tommy Hayden gave chase. By lap 12
of the 17 circuits, class champion Tommy slipped ahead of his brother,
with Hacking directly in his crosshairs. Jamie refused to wilt under the
pressure, however, and proceeded to build nearly a one-second lead over
Hayden at the start of the last lap. Even though Hayden closed the gap
to near zero by the last turn, he still couldn’t get around the
unflappable Hacking and his YZF-R6.
Jamie earned maximum points for the day having earned pole position,
leading the most laps, and of course winning the seventeen lap race. He
is now tied for the points lead with Tommy Hayden. As Yamaha roadracing
manager Tom Halverson says, “We’re happy to have gained valuable points
and this puts in a tie for the lead so early in the series. Jamie won
the championship in 2003, then all last year he struggled. He’s
definitely back, and he really wants this championship.”
